Ben Stiller is steller

Ben Stiller is known for his comedy work in classic, quotable films like Zoolander. His latest movie, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, diverges from the typical humorous roles he has played.

Walter Mitty, though timid and distracted in real life, has a fantastical imagination. In his day dreams, he is the strong and adventurous hero who saves the day and gets the girl.

Stiller takes on the role of an altogether uninteresting photograph developer at LIFE magazine. LIFE, like so many magazines before it, is going to be published solely online and stop print magazine production. A free-spirited photographer, Sean O’Connell, promises his latest picture would make an incredible cover that epitomizes the essence of LIFE.

Mitty has had a lasting work relationship O’Connell, played by Sean Penn, and he is the sole person trusted to develop his prints. When Walter can’t find the negative O’Connell’s quintessence photo, he sets off on an expedition to track down the elusive artist.

Despite it’s negative reviews, the film was one of my favorites this holiday season. Both Stiller and Kristin Wiig, who plays Mitty’s love interest, step outside of their comfortable comedy boxes and take on more developed characters. The cinematic details are incredible, with creative camera angles and unexpected displays of text. The soundtrack is out of this world, featuring artists like Of Monsters and Men.

Besides that, the story is inspiring and thought-provoking. I couldn’t help but think about the irony of posting a review for the movie online, the media form that threatened Mitty’s job.
